The Fall of XI-340
In the remote Solarian system, 1.2 light years from Earth and a quarter light year from the nearest outpost, lay XI-340 — a planet unlike any other. Its crust contained vast deposits of Magnium, Xeneium, and Rednium — three of the rarest and most coveted elements in the galaxy.
Humanity established a secret mining colony there, believing the world hidden from their enemies, the reptilian Celtons. These colonists labored for three-month cycles, awaiting freighters to haul their refined minerals back to Earth. They believed themselves safe, assured that the Celtons were losing their war in their home system, Celton-5.
But betrayal runs deep. A traitor revealed the colony’s existence, and the Celtons descended. A single destroyer launched an overwhelming assault. The colonists fought with only fifty short-range fighters and makeshift weapons. When the Celtons fired upon XI-340’s crust, they triggered a catastrophic Rednium chain reaction. The entire planet shattered in a blinding explosion, crippling the Celton destroyer and annihilating the colony.
The Cocoon World
A handful survived. Five shuttles and twenty fighters carried just 250 souls to XI-340.1 — a tiny Mercury-sized planet nearby. From its surface, they watched XI-340 die. But something strange occurred. The fragments of the destroyed planet spiraled into orbit around XI-340.1, forming a dense cocoon of debris infused with glowing veins of Magnium, Xeneium, and Rednium.
Instead of raining destruction, much of the debris was repelled by XI-340.1’s Magnium-rich core. The planet became shrouded in a constantly shifting barricade of rock and energy, an asteroid shield that was both prison and protection. The humans were stranded. Rescue would not come for three months.
The Celtons, though wounded, survived as well. Their crippled destroyer limped into the cocoon, its surviving fleet harvesting mineral-rich asteroids while preparing another strike to finish humanity’s survivors.
The Struggle for Survival
Humanity’s survivors now face impossible odds. They fly damaged fighters and jury-rigged shuttles. Their only hope lies in scavenging special asteroids glowing with the three rare minerals:
- Xeneium — blue, energy-rich shards that supercharge shields and time-dilation maneuvers.
- Rednium — volatile red crystals that overdrive weapons and propulsion systems.
- Magnium — dense gray fragments that alter mass, enabling tighter turns or powerful ramming strikes.
Every sortie is a balance of risk and reward: venture deeper into the cocoon for richer resources, or stay near the edge for safety but stagnation. Meanwhile, the Celtons stalk the shadows of the belt, determined to harvest the cocoon for themselves and eradicate the last human survivors.
The Stakes
If the humans can survive long enough to destroy the Celton flagship, reinforcements from the nearest outpost may arrive in time to secure XI-340.1 and its mineral cocoon for humanity. But if the Celtons succeed, they will gain control of the most valuable mineral cache in known space — and humanity may never recover.
The battle for the Cocoon World will decide the fate of both species.
